(the destruction of Coney Island)
The Syrian came down like the wolf on the fold
And his pockets were so gleaming, glittered with gold,
His spears not of iron but a much colder steel,
Like a two sided coin in a Coney Isle deal.
There were some in his path that were aged and enticed
And thanking the Jew, while blessing the Christ,
They each acted quietly, raising no alarms
Till towering all, was raised his coat of arms.
It’s a proud golden horse, an idol of pride,
His nose up in victory, with Death as his ride,
And a bowstring of trickery concealed at his side
Sheepishly smiling to those who by his hand have died.
But some were not fooled, and instead raised their voice,
Shouting “By God, I still have a choice.
Not all wealth lie in dollars and “sense,”
Love and camaraderie, pay life’s dearest expense.”
But some argued “change is like the waves of the ocean.”
Replied, “memories fade fast without added motion.
Leave us our history, keep us our past,
And in these sandy beaches,
That bring the oceans to our doors
Shall from us never be cast
To all these lechers and leeches.
Being forever ours and forever yours.”
