Can we be so foolish as to think our world is random? The word ‘patterns,’ according to Webster's Dictionary, refers to “a person or thing considered worthy of imitation or copying, or, a model or plan used as a guide.” When we doubt Hashem's hand in all things, we must simply stop and look about to see Hashem's perfection everywhere. The sweet apple we eat with its fresh flesh, and the core containing its seeds that brings forth another tree, is certainly a manifestation of perfection. The human body with its complex systems, brings about daily miracles such as childbirth as well as creative ideas. All of the things that we may consider everyday occurrences, when seen through conscious eyes, are phenomenal.

Our task is to remind ourselves to remain conscious and aware of the many blessings and gifts that we receive. Hashem provides us with patterns and traditions to keep us on the righteous path. We have only to look at the prescribed mitzvot to know we are loved and that this is the path to follow. We are fortunate to be creatures on the receiving end of what has proven to be effective for thousands of years. Why ‘reinvent the wheel’ when we are given a blueprint for a satisfying and meaningful life?
Torah is our structure to live by and to make us the best people we can be, while improving the world around us. We are responsible for each other. Our purpose in life is to emulate Hashem's goodness and kindness within the confines of a workable structure. For example, our morning prayers are to thank Hashem for bringing us out of the darkness of night and into a new bright day. Our daily blessings are magnified by the gift of Shabbat. Every Friday night as the candles are lit and we say kiddush it is as if Hashem has given us the world all over again. His presence is felt at our Friday night table. The pattern of the week begins once more. On Saturday our gift continues as we walk with our children and parents to shul. This time spent away from the demands of daily life is precious because it gives us the opportunity to reconnect with our loved ones. The day continues in prayer, reflection and celebration. As Shabbat concludes with Havdala prayers we are renewed, refreshed and ready to wish each other a joyous week. What a wonderful pattern we have to enjoy and follow!
Another beautiful pattern in our lives is the blessings of the many holidays and festivals we celebrate in the Jewish calendar. The predictability of the joyfulness we can anticipate enriches our lives. The cycle of holidays reinforces the continuity of family life. Generation after generation perpetuate the traditions according to Hashem's commandments.
“The Rock! His work is perfect, for all His ways are justice.” (Devarim 32:4)
In his book, Learn the Secret, Moshe Goldberger states, "Everything Hashem created and everything he does is perfect. Every organ of every creature was fashioned and designed to work to perfection. Similarly, every episode in history has happened perfectly in accordance with Hashem's master plan.” The patterns of our lives must have a master plan as well. Hashem has given us the basics but we must employ our own free will and discipline to fashion our own individual way. Although at times we may encounter challenges, we can realize that these things are fleeting, and we are privileged to be part of Hashem's master plan.
